Milo picks up two awards

Published Tuesday, June 09, 2009 3:53 PM by Sam

Milo wins 'Best Technology of E3 2009' award from Eurogamer and "WOW" Moment award from Gamefocus.

"The clamour to call Milo a fake when no-one ever claimed he was real - Molyneux himself admitting to “tricks” - proves just how hair-raising, how unsettling Microsoft and Lionhead’s achievement is. It has the smell of witchcraft about it." Eurogamer wrote.

The article goes on; “Milo was the hands-down sensation of E3, but that's not the only reason it takes the Best Technology award. It was the synthesis of Lionhead's AI experiments with Microsoft's technically amazing and surprisingly functional Project Natal hands-free interface to create something genuinely new - not just a demo resembling a flavour-of-the-mass-market Wii game - that attracted our attention, not to mention Steven Spielberg's. Usually the conservative follower of trends, it was Microsoft who took the boldest step into the future this E3.”

Gamefocus said the following about their “WOW” Moment - Project Natal – Milo "Some people say its fake, others think its scary. Either way, this jaw-dropping project from Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux raised the skepticism bar up a notch. Not that we don’t believe Mr. Molyneux and his claims. Nonetheless, it made us ask ourselves what if it was true. There’s no doubt that if this project works, we could assist at the next evolution of role playing games...and even more."

sjoba321, your absurd if you think milo is the "first" step towards AI. there are plenty of machines that have been even if only limited programmed to think for themselves.

as for milo, i have to agree with the people who believe it to be fake. it just felt scripted. not to mention the just repeated the same demo process over to people who got to see it in person at E3. that being said it does show the possible potential and direction video games are moving towards and for that i applaud the lionhead team for thinking outside the box.

well all i can say is congrats and that they deserved it and as for milo. well as you know they are working on the project still today like take a look at fable 2 for instance. when they showed us the demo of the dog interaction i was like WOW this is like unreal and when the finished product came i was jaw dropped and i loved it to pieces so maybe when natal is finished andreleased then and only trhen can the truh be revealed about what it can adn cannot do and therefore a proper view on it can be made.

Now all we need is an adapted version of Milo, give it millatary training and install it to a robot then we have something really useful. But its cool but not much of a G o o d [Good] game.

Yeah, Project Natal is revolutionary technology same for Milo, great work from Lionhead, they always do awesome jobs from Fable to Fable 2.

I can see them using this technology with Fable 3 where you could control your character with your own body, and actually interacting and speaking to npcs.

As for what Skormsweasel said, funny, and that robot can be programmed with the 3 laws of robotics, a.k.a an incident happened like I-Robot.

How exactly do you win the 'Best Technology of E3' award when the creative director comes right out and says that it doesn't really work and is based on simple tricks?  I don't get it.  I guess if Nintendo had made a fancy CGI trailer showing a peripheral that generates holograms, and had an empty cardboard box sitting in their booth; their staff handing each person who showed up to try it a LSD pill then they would have won the best technology award instead.

I agree with the 'wow' one.  I personally would say it probably belongs more to Project Natal than Milo, but Milo did paint a basic image of how NPC interactions could be in the future.

nice job on Milo, I found it to be interesting although I also don't believe its as G o o d [Good] as they claim it to be just like the dog in fable 2, I find the dog in fable 2 is actually pretty stupid, when the dog is supposed to show the hero to where to find something it just hangs back and does nothing and also gets stuck, Milo will probably be just like it, G o o d [Good] in demo's but rubbish in reality.

Although I think the concept of Milo and NATAL was great, I don't think the 360 system, in any upgraded state, is ready for that kind of input.  Too much to process.  There was a definite lag between the demonstrator and the Natal prototype.

When the 360.2 (720?) comes out, maybe.

Cheers to Lionhead and PeterM for making headway in such a complex environment.
