A first attempt at modelling anything serious. Created in Blender. Obviously still needs lots of work..

    @whatsInAname8:
Not bad, need's some texturing on the face... I'm not sure if the pupils are meant to be none existent if not then you need to add them other wise not bad. Nice hair.. really nice hair... it's hard to get right hair and well your's looks nice.

Well another new batch for today (Christ I'm on a role this week).
This is an Ant for my Big Black youtube video (Yes I know the title sounds a little daft and no it won't be the actual name of the video but it's the temporary one for now). Started it at about 9 so I'd say I've done pretty well to have it finished in 3 hours.

Hears a front view of the head... may need some improvements, possibly some tweaking here and there but for now I think it's okay.

Here's a rear view... again I think some tweaking here and there may be required but for now I think it looks G o o d [Good].

Here's a little picture to put in perspective the size difference between Big Black and the ant. Big Black is sneaking down upon an unsuspecting ant.

Well there you go... I think tomorrow if there's time I'll be designing a wasp. Please offer you critique, either positive of negative... it's all important.

Very nicely done, I wish I could texture that well. Looking forward to more of your work.

Thank you Simmy, in all honesty the only thing really textured there is the cave and water.. the rest is model work.. it's not to hard to be honest... the Ant wasn't any way... neither was the cave to be honest... the cave took me an hour and the ant took me three... big black took me a while to get the hair looking right. Thank you for your compliment though. You could help me with this project if you wanted.. you can come up with a few insect ideas that aren't too infeasible. I'd need a few examples though.. like say a wasp mixed with a worm and such. If you do come up with the name and idea of this creature I will try and model it and if I ever get this project done and put on youtube then you will be credited for the design of said creature... this goes to any one and not just Sim btw.

At the moment I am struggling on making this wasp though... harder then expected.

This was my first attempt at trying out modelling hair in 3d, didn't go too badly for a first attempt but got a long way to go.

Just work hard my friend and you'll get there, do you have any new contributions to add to our ever growing library of 3D art work?, it seems rather rare these days to find any contributors other then me and Simmy. Please do post when you can, I'm no expert but I will offer my critique and advice to any thing you post no matter how great or poor of quality you think there at Smily [:)].

Re: 3D - Post it all here

I do have some ^^ I am a newbie to 3D modeling, texturing and all that so I'm not that great at the moment I'm afraid, just started learning it at uni but I am really enjoying it. Sorry if the images are huge!

First time modeling and texturing. I did a painted concept for the room and I prefer that to this for some reason :/ I couldn't get the light going through the windows how I wanted it to sadly :/

I followed a tutorial and then it left me to do things on my own to learn in the most complicated bits so much trial and error in trying to figure out how to get it to look like how I wanted it to.

Re: 3D - Post it all here

Yes ^^ I painted a room concept and went through and studied lots of furniture so I ended up deigning the how I wanted it to look and then I did some orthographic drawings, scanned them in and modelled using the drawings.

Does anyone have any experience with Mudbox or Zbrush? I would like to start learning it soon but I haven't seen anywhere with any tutorials and I have no idea what all the settings do. Also, is there an easy way to UV map things for example, clicking a button instead of having to do it all myself?

Re: 3D - Post it all here

G o o d [Good] work their Stapey I like the room I also liked the train however it's pre-rendered so I would love to see how it looks when textured. Sorry I've only had limited experience with Z-brush and none with Mud-brush I'm more of a blender 3D man my self. Keep up the G o o d [Good] work. I should be posting some shortly. I don't do all that much research for my work as you did, often it's when I'm bored and I'll just do it how it comes to my head.

The train looked awful rendered and I wouldn't know where to start with texturing it >.
Oh is that the free program? I have heard really G o o d [Good] things about it. I would like to give many programs a try one day so see which one I like the work flow of more.

I can't wait to see more of your own work, the face really made me want to do some character modelling but I don't know how to do that just yet and I don't have the time Sad [:(]

Re: 3D - Post it all here

Damn some G o o d [Good] stuffs on here since I last posted Smily [:)] ^_^ has been a while, but weee i'm back... i hope ><

    What program you using Stapey?

3dtotal.com has a few tutorials on zbrush and some other programs Big Smile [:D]..
http://www.3dtotal.com/ (under free stuff - tutorials)

Ugh the joy of zbrush, a whole different world compaired to every other program out there.. Had fun learning that but its such an amazing program and so powerful! Mudbox is easier to use, just jump on and play (to get your model into Mudbox or Zbrush, make it into a .obj then open it up in zbrush or mudbox Big Smile [:D]

UV Mapping is such a *** to do but you have to do it all by hand.. you can try and use a program called roadkill to help you unwrap http://www.pullin-shapes.co.uk/page8.htm but you still have to work out where to make the seams and stuffs then sort it out in the software (max, maya, xsi etc etc ><Wink [;)]..

If ya need anymore help give me a poke and I'll try and help ya ^_^

here's some of my latest stuffs since I've been so quiet the last few months Smily [:)]

I'm using Maya at the moment ^^; might start teaching myself Max as one of my Tutor says it renders better and the lighting is or something o.O; but he's biased as he hates Maya so >.<

Re: 3D - Post it all here

I use 3ds Max for most of my modeling as Maya i keep getting lost in all the menu's.. Its like a maze in Maya for modelers haha >< My friend who animates for Crytek hates Max for animating and prefurs Maya, for me Maya is annoying to use for modeling and I loves Max lol. Though I haven't given Maya much of a chance.
If you know Maya then you'll pick up Max easy Big Smile [:D] It took me about a week to get the hang of Maya (since we were taught in Max for year 1 n 2).
The manor took me a while since I worked on a few pieces at once, the yellow house and the cornershop took me a week (the EA Criterion test, shame the job was cancelled otherwise I might have been working there now ><Wink [;)] urm the huts took me a day or summit like that to get all the render to textures rendered, stairs took me a few days to get the render right and then play about in photoshop. All the props took a few hours, did one a day. Oh and Mo took a few days to get looking like that. I think thats everything, I'm quicker at modeling than the texturing so it usually the textures that take up the extra days >_<

Haha Stick out tongue [:P] awww thanks Sovvolf. I need to come back to the forum more often, just been busy and stuffs lately but should be here more often to bug ya now Stick out tongue [:P] and show off more work! BTW your ant looks awesome Stick out tongue [:P] Big Smile [:D] I remember doing a bug as one of my projects in year 2 was fun and learnt alot from it ^_^. Keep up the awesome work!

Ooooo you better finish it Stick out tongue [:P] I wanna see more of your work, your stuff gets better and better Big Smile [:D]

Re: 3D - Post it all here

Well I've been off this week from College with flu so I've been passing time by painting models (Warhammer) and creating a few on the computer. I've just got the rig working on my soldier model however that model isn't all finished yet however to celebrate creating a near successful rig (some thing I've been trying to do for quite some time) I though I'd give my soldier a gun.

So alas I created a nice little Colt Python (My favourite hand gun)a task that was surprisingly taking me just about 2 hours to do. So for the last 2 hours I've been playing about with the gun and my model and thought I'd post a few pics of the gun over here as I haven't posted any thing in a while so here goes.

I've also do a little Youtube clip showing this off in a little movie just to see the gun in action. The clip is about 2 seconds long and there's no sound and I haven't yet gave my gun a muzzle flash.
    Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sQPX43NvpM

    Yes shameless advertising.

Nice model Stapey especially for your first go at doing characters keep up the G o o d [Good] work.

Re: 3D - Post it all here

Okay not that I want to double post but I was the last to post and I can't edit the post as it's been too long. Okay I'm on a role this week first a shotgun I did on friday

This was my easiest to date. Taking less then an hour to do. Possibly due to the shape and simplicity of this type of shot gun.

I order to show off the gun in a background better then just pure blue I decided to take it to the winter forest that I used for the python. I also wanted to test my rig out a little more with it. I've noticed a G o o d [Good] few mistakes with the rig that need rectifying.

A Pulse Rifle from the movie Aliens. This gun is possibly the hardest gun I've modelled. As I've found out while creating this model the gun is made up of three other guns. The body is of a Thompson sub-machine gun, and the grenade launcher is a mixture of a Spas 12 shotgun and a Remington shot gun. Variant 1 this gun has a mirror modifier on the noise of the green casing to make the gun look as if it's been out in the snow. I've re-used the background I've used for the colt python and the Ithica 12 shotgun as it's a G o o d [Good] background image for mirror modifiers.

Time taken: Just under 6 hours

Variant 2 this one does not have a ray mirror modifier but the noise colour and size has not been changed.
not all that fond of this one... looks more like some one as white paint on it rather then snow.

Variant 3 this one also has no ray mirror modifier however I have added three different noise modifiers with different normal levels and colours. Sort of makes the gun looks darker and a little more used due to the noise level.

Variant 4 has the same noise modifiers as variant three only with the noise modifier from variant one added to it with a ray mirror modifier. This one is my personal favourite at the moment.
