Help a nice young guy get into 3D Animation

Hey guys, right im basicly a blank slate in the game industry and the world of animation lol. Done nothing, know nothing and Im about take my my very first steps Smily <img src=">
Im 17 and I've just got onto a college course (starting in Sep) its: ND Multimedia Lev. 3
This covers art skills, web design and 2d & 3d animation. Which is great, but being an eager young guy, "I want to start -NOW" lol
So I've rummaged around online and a whole lot of nothing makes any sense to me (pretty much). ((BTW -what's NURBS?? I keep seeing that term, not knowing what it means /stands for and its RLY bugging me! lol ))
So anyway i went to various sites and it seems everyone is talking about something called MAYA so i looked around some more and stumbled across a book.
Called : Introducing MAYA 8. 3D for beignners. at Amazon
So yeah i suppose im not actually asking anything really lol, but was hoping anyone/everyone might want to share any/many pearls of wisdom ???
    Big Smile [:D]

Re: Help a nice young guy get into 3D Animation

I can tell you NURBS stands for Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (I think...), and it's used when building models in various design packages, amongst other things. It's kind of a way of describing a curve using a series of fixed points although it can be used to describe full objects. There's a guide of sorts here

    http://devworld.apple.com/dev/techsupport/develop/issue25/schneider.html

It's not for maya, but it covers the basics. It'll probably make more sense once you've done some 3d work, to put it in a bit more context, mind you.

Also, if you want to play about with Maya, there's a version of it called the Personal Learning Edition that's based on Maya 8.5 and is free for download here

    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=7639525

There's a few restrictions with it - it puts watermarks on all images, for example - but it's G o o d [Good] if you want to start playing about.

EDIT - Dunno if this will be any help (I've never used Maya tbh - I do some landscape work in Vue, and animation in poser, but the poser stuff is mostly adapting pre-existing models for my own use), but there's some tutorials here...

Re: Help a nice young guy get into 3D Animation

I gave a maya classes here in Mexico(thats my Country) and i could tell you that even that maya is so popular in the animation industries its not the only one in fact autodesk (thats the company that make maya) has so many others

the important thing is not to learn how to use the software but to know what you want from it. If you want to design characters you sould learn to draw characters first if you wish to animate then learn 2d animation but not a software a technic and to give ritm and atitude to your caracter if you wish to learn architecture also learn architecture and so on .
you nedd to know what you want the software to do befor you know how to use it succesfuly when you deside then learn the software and it will be easy and then just then learn all other parts of the software...

I hope I helped, but dont just go trowing what I just said it will help you

and sorry for the english as I said before I am Mexican an know so little of english - but I will get better.Up []G o o d [Good]Laugh []^^ [^^]

    viva Mexico carnales!!!
