Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

GiorgioKiwi turns out not to be a one-hit-wonder - all his available films have made the lifeboat:

The Visitor (German with English subtitles)

    by GiorgioKiwi

    Genre: Science Fiction Comedy

    Duration: 7.5 minutes - released Monday 2nd July 2007, 26 ratings, 4.65 star average

BBFC rating: U - suitable for all

    ***** stars

    Great fun!

I enjoyed every minute of this.

Apart from some cartoonish overlays at the start, which were overshadowed by some nice special effects, it was technically perfect.

Even the alien VO was G o o d [Good] and the main character's reaction too.

The gags involving the alien changing shape to suit the images and creatures it saw were very funny.

No need to crawl through the sewers though - come to North Cambridge, the edge of the city, and he'd get all the fuel he needs from our lovely sewage works.

I know I'm reading too much into this - but I saw a "Green Message" in the film. They find what the alien needs to get home - a green fuel - but he can't find any petrol for his car!

Well done to the composer of the music (who also wrote the amusing script), it worked well without overpowering.

A fun film if ever there was one!

I think GiorgioKiwi was literally the most underrated director on TMO. He barely managed 100 ratings for all of his films put together. A travesty. Check them out ...

Next up should be Marvellousguppimovies but I've watched all of his films barring a "pass-along" film from other directors. He made the 3rd scene for "Ninjas Will Always Live Forever p76" - I've chosen not to go there and this won't be on the lifeboat.

Mixmasterfestus's films were completed earlier in this thread thanks to the suggestion of another TMO-er.

qtigger will be next with his "Dumb Blonde Joke -QTigger Style"

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

    This not-so-dumb blond gets in:

Dumb Blonde Joke - QTigger Style

    Genre: Dumb Blond Comedy

    Duration: 4 minutes - released Tuesday 19th June 2007, 29 ratings, 4.93 star average

    ***** stars

Lol - Dumb Blonds make men dumb.

But before that, the gags were actually quite funny (to my surprise). I hadn't heard any of them before. And they just kept coming! ...

I can safely say I had 5 stars worth of laughs in that 4 minutes easily. That's really all I need to say to recommend this film. G o o d [Good] VO - apart from the blond, that sucked - but just added to the laugh factor in the process.

I'm watching loads of great movies - to think that some of the undiscovered ones will be history in less than a week ... please suggest more.

Meanwhile, all of George_Locust's available films are in the archive.

Tomorrow, I'll be looking at four of thebiz's earlier films.

I've chosen to skip "New Adventures of the Lone Ranger (ep2)" as episode 1 is no longer available.

So that means, "Dead Extras", "American Bathroom Graffiti", "Speed Dating in the Post Apocalypse" and "Great Lovers in History and Legend Wilt" will be watched.

6 days left - if you have a suggestion, now would be a G o o d [Good] time to say so.

Another one will be carefully lowered into the lifeboat:

    Dead Extras

    by thebiz

    Genre: Comedy Drama Sketch

    Duration: 3 minutes - released Monday 6th August 2007, 29 ratings, 4.48 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for some disturbing imagery

    **** stars

Lol - that lass must get loads of work!

An interesting one-joke comedy - thanks to some G o o d [Good] dialogue leading up to each employment of the "hero" extra.

G o o d [Good] overlay work as well - and the music was strangely catchy in a quirky way.

A big thumbs up for this addition to the archive:

    American Bathroom Graffiti

    by thebiz

    Genre: Wacky Humour

    Duration: 7 minutes - released Wednesday 12th September 2007, 36 ratings, 4.78 star average

BBFC rating: (15) - for bad language

    ***** stars

A very funny comedy whose jokes overcame the substandard VO quality.

A comedy is judged on the number of laughs it induces - this had bucketloads. And yet, its rough and ready look belies some superb craftsmanship in the animations and overlays as well which were perfectly synched and comically timed.

I loved the ending where he justifies his reviewing style to the three turds! (Reminds me of my review thread.)

Funny stuff - a big thumbs up!

oops - I said "substandard VO quality" - I should stress that I mean audio quality and not the performance which was very G o o d [Good] (most of the reason why this got a 5).

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

Thanks to the acting skills of Charlton Heston, this comedy narrowly makes it into the lifeboat:

Speed Dating in the Post Apocalypse

    by thebiz

Genre: Spoof Post Apocalypse Comedy Trailer

    Duration: 2.5 minutes - released Sunday 14th October 2007, 29 ratings, 4.86 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for mild gore

    **** stars

This one scrapes 4-stars, it wasn't that funny - I did chuckle at "ghoulfriend" though! It had a nice atmospheric opening as well. But this film will be preserved because of the Charlton Heston impression (great) - he double-handedly saved this film from a watery grave.

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

Well - a first here - a trailer is about to make it into the lifeboat. Trailers are usually riff-raff unworthy of being saved, for what are they but advertisements for a film that will, or will never exist.

In this case - it isn't really a trailer until the final few shots, up until then it's a funny, well designed - erm - mind f*ck!

Great Lovers in History and Legend Wilt (Trailer)

    by thebiz

Genre: Theatrical Trailer for "The Many Exotic Loves of Caviar Alejandro Bellasante"

Duration: just over 1.5 minutes - released Sunday 2nd March 2008, 30 ratings, 4.7 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for adult references

    ***** stars

As a trailer for Caviar, this was excellent.

I loved how our attention was divided from the events onscreen to the totally different subject of the subtitles - and then the pre-orgasmic moaning in the soundtrack!

I also liked how the announcer was talking about how many thousand points this guy scored when the visuals showed him continually missing!

This is a rarety - apart from the ending where it is revealed to be a trailer for the excellent Caviar Bellasante film, this is a G o o d [Good] comedy film in its own right (4-star's worth in my opinion).

So I'm preserving this one as a 4-star comedy film in its own right.

I should stress that as a trailer it's 5 stars - its original purpose. But as a standalone comedy film it's a 4-star film and still makes the lifeboat.

As a general rule, no trailers will be admitted into the lifeboat unless they can be viewed as standalone films like this one - a real rarety!

Well - thebiz has done well - a 100% rescue rate!

Next up is rileyman - the only film I haven't watched is "Ode to a Sten Gun". I consider this a spin-off from "For My Fellow Soldier", a film in which I played a couple of very G o o d [Good] roles. So I consider this to be a direct spin-off from a film I'm very fond of for personal reasons - it's indirectly part of my experience as an actor on this site, so it gets in automatically as a "photo album" entry into the lifeboat, I'll watch it later.

All of cinecitta's remaining films have not only been archived but won my highest award.

All of Lethal_Entertainment's remaining films are archived.

TheFlyingDuDe has "Jack the Hero" and "Piano2" which I've not watched yet - those will be next.

Smily [:)] It's the kind of thing I notice in relation to the story.

One of the characters moans about being lost and not having a point of reference - I was going "look behind you! You have a trail of African shields leading all the way back to the village!" Stick out tongue [:P]

If I was lost in the jungle, what would I use as a point of reference? Naturally, I look at the surroundings - that was such an obvious object. I kind of put myself in the character's situation.

I'm just curious - is the shield part of a default set, or was it a set dressing that got mistakenly duplicated?

PS. I'm looking forward to King Kong 2 - loved part 1.

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

"Jack the Hero" by TheFlyingDuDe scored *** stars and isn't on the boat.

However, his other film has made it:

    Piano

    by TheFlyingDuDe-Films

    Genre: Arthouse Musical Drama Sketches

Duration: just over 9 minutes - released Friday 25th May 2007, 67 ratings, 4.91 star average

BBFC rating: U - suitable for all

    **** stars

"Use music the right way" - but he goes and cuts off the music at the most poignant place in the final sketch - and chops off the music in the credits.

Having achieved a terrific atmosphere in the rest of the film, these botched finishes to this musical story really grated.

Anyway - I liked the use of the piano as a recurring character linking the stories. The music itself wasn't bad, but a bit generic. I think different styles of piano playing for each scene would have been G o o d [Good], and with their own interpretive possibilities.

The final scene where the mother died in a car crash while her daughter was sent to her piano lesson was very moving. [paraphrasing] "I never forgot the piece I was taught that day".

Some VO was better than others in terms of audio quality, but this was a G o o d [Good] film with a heart clearly behind it.

    That's it for TheFlyingDuDe.

MefuneAkira's films have already been watched.

Meowan is the last Prufrock winner who's remaining online TMO films will be considered.

Those not exclusively in German that I have yet to watch are "Before Dawn" and "Three Lives".

Meowan won the 23rd Prufrock Award for Outstanding Cinema for In the Nick of Time

I've been instructed to place the new TMU link for this film wherever possible.

This western by Meowan gets in:

Before Dawn (German with English subtitles)

    by meowan

    Genre: Western Crime Drama

    Duration: 13 minutes - released Saturday 14th July 2007, 120 ratings, 4.86 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for some violence and mild nudity

    **** stars

Very well shot and edited, G o o d [Good] use of music as well.

The story was very contrived with far too many coincidences for my liking - the hero just so happens to have the same name as the barman (but in reverse), he gets thrown out of the saloon just in time to be knocked over by a blast while a bank robbery is in process. There's unlucky and unbelievably unlucky!

The dialogue was also contrived - the lead up to the gunfight didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I couldn't see exactly what they were falling out over enough that they'd want to kill each other.

But, apart from my problems with the story, this was still a G o o d [Good] watch.

Will this film be the last film to enter the lifeboat? That's now up to you.

    Three Lives

    by meowan

    Genre: Time Travel Drama

Duration: just over 21.5 minutes - released Tuesday 26th September 2006, 109 ratings, 4.96 star average

BBFC rating: (15) - for bad language

    **** stars

Dodgy American accents aside (for some characters), this was a well-written and constructed time travel tale.

However, it loses a star because of its slap-dash treatment of the timeline.

We're seemingly told (or did I miss something?) that 9-years after the 40s and the war, some people were driving around in modern Ferraris! I might be able to overlook that in other genres of film, but for a time travel drama it's unforgiveable. The period and objects within it must be given proper attention.
According to the timeline of this film, laser guns were readily available in the 80s (or late 70s)!

I'm surprised at this sloppiness given how G o o d [Good] the rest of the film is.

Very G o o d [Good] camerawork and some of the musical cues. Other cues (particularly in the time travel sequence) weren't dramatic enough given the amazing event.

I also lost much sympathy for the main character given what he did to the scientist in order to access the time machine. That wasn't a wise story choice. There are other ways of getting him in the machine without making him unlikeable.

The music tended to drown out the crucial last lines in the film (a little bit). They were G o o d [Good] lines as well.

So some G o o d [Good], some bad - but it was worth watching.

    So - it's now December 1st.

All films will disappear forever from TMO on December 5th.

I'm going to rephrase the question:

Which is the best film you've ever seen on TMO?

I know I've missed some G o o d [Good] ones, tell me what they are.

Thanks - I'm planning on doing an update list shortly - it LOOKS like there's going to be no more suggestions. But I could be wrong ............

If I get a deluge of films, they will all be downloaded and Phase 2 will be put into operation after December 5th -

    - that's when I give glowing reviews to the ones that have made the lifeboat and a warning that the films that have fallen short will be tossed overboard in one week. I will invite any interested parties to request that I send them the condemned film(s).

Um... why? Your own review accuses it of being nothing more than a rip-off of Alien with unlikeable characters, you didn't like the story, and found the dialogue unrealistic. Kindly remove it - those who enjoy the film can still see it on TMU.

Even a page a day will get you there.

"Foreigner" was watched and reviewed in early December 2006, 2 years ago almost to the day.

Despite some misgivings about the film, expressed in the review, it scored 4 stars and got put into the vault. That means I liked it when everything is taken into consideration.

    Films that I don't like, or don't see something significantly G o o d [Good] about, never get 4-stars.

If I didn't like what I saw it wouldn't have scored so highly.

    *****************************
Anyway - I'll watch it again.

If it scores *** stars or less, your request will be granted and it will be removed.

    THE RESULTS:

    A new appraisal of "Foreigner":

It is indeed similar to Alien in many respects. Ship crash-lands on a planet - crew go out to investigate and bring back a malignant entity on board. Rest of film involves trying to deal with a hidden menace. I wouldn't say that it was "nothing more than a rip-off" though - and if that's what I did say at the time, I got that wrong... I don't know now, the review has been destroyed along with all the films and I haven't had a chance to read it again.

This one did have a twist where the crew gangs up immediately on their alien crew member - that's when I thought the characters deserved to get what they got. I find it hard to like such prejudiced characters. There was no evidence whatsoever that the alien had left the ship while most were out exploring. He was accused basically just because he was an alien (or foreigner as suggested in the title). There was nothing in his meek, grovelling, subservient character that suggested he was ever capable of pre-planned murder.

Earlier on, one character uses racist language towards the alien character more than once ("nice landing pickle-skin" & "it's called gravity you scaled moron"). This was the one which survived all the way to the end of the film (nearly). I was pleased to see the end of her as a character, just wish it had been sooner.

Then the film just ends - all crew members effectively dead with the captain's body being used as a host for the invisible alien who wins. No credits adds to the incomplete feel of the ending.

On the dialogue, it started well enough - there was a G o o d [Good] gag at the start:

Crew Member1: "What's the story with this one?"

Crew Member 2: "Didn't you hear the old man? This could be it!"

Crew Member 1: "You mean the first colony sites?"

Crew Member 2: "No Val. Our first paycheck!"

By the second half of the film though, it got very stilted and - yes - unrealistic. Not really in the words used (with the exception of the following example which is simply unintelligible), but in the pacing and tone which sometimes didn't follow.

    eg.

Crew Member 1: "Somebody did this to her. Her throat was crushed Captain."

    Captain: "We think"

Crew Member 2: "We'll make sure it doesn't"

    [GAP]

Captain: "I think you may be right ..."

I still can't make head or tail of that.

As in the first half of the film, the music under that was some light electric piano. This easy listening didn't go at all well with the crash scene or the critical dialogue. It probably shouldn't have been in the film at all, it didn't fit the mood of any of the scenes it was used in.

So - why do I like this film enough to keep it?

There are some spirited performances among the cast. My favourite is unfortunately the first female victim but she was by no means alone. Though their characters are bigoted racists towards aliens, they were mostly played well. Even the alien was played well.

The suspenseful use of the camera near the end, and with much better suited music, worked too. It was exciting even though I felt no sympathy for the remaining human characters (which is where my main problem with the story lies).

Nicely edited together throughout on the visuals, and with some mods that I hadn't seen before at the time (the force wall being an example).

So overall: a bad hole in the central premise of the story which renders all of the main human characters unlikeable and some technical goofs in the dialogue later in the film; but well edited, acted and visually interesting in many places.

    **** stars

    Neroxc:

Fantastic work here Jazz , really appreciate what you doing and am sure that the community does so aswell.

How about Fraas's Genome , loved that film.

    Nero.

I'm afraid you're too late with that one - all films have now been removed from the site, barring a small selection they've kept on for posterity.

    G o o d [Good]bye TMO uploads!

Request denied?  What's the issue with not archiving a movie and making it available to other people when the creator has expressly asked you not to do so?

I thought you were doing this as a service to a community.  It would be a shame if you did it at the cost of being a disservice to the creator.

    Couldn't agree more with Dulci.

Tar asked you nicely to remove it from your list. Its HIS film and I would think you would respect that simple fact. Also, to use a cold response like 'request denied' is likewise unecessarily rude.

    Thanks for the fun TMO!

And yet the creator has used this thread to promote his film as being available for anyone to watch on TMU. Which he's quite welcome to do. He's not withdrawing it at all. In fact, if anyone does request the film, I'll direct them to TMU myself as first port of call - saves me having to e-mail it.

Furthermore, when we uploaded our films to TMO, we put them in the public domain for anyone to download and keep as they saw fit, that's how the archive got started. It is a private collection of films that were made available for download by their creators at the moment of release - he's no more right to ask me to delete his film from my harddrive than any other film.

I am allowing any interested parties to request any film from my private collection. The more films the better for everyone.

If anyone privately requests a film, I will share it with them - that is the service I'm providing to the community. I'm not publicly broadcasting his work - it's not being displayed on a TMU channel or on YouTube, for instance - or even being made available on a server. It's sitting in my private library over which I have sole control over what goes in or goes out. If someone I share it with decides to broadcast it, then he can take it up with them.

Nor am I intending to advertise the film - it got a brief mention at the bottom of January 2008's movie vault entry (title only) and that's all it will get.

The only reason why he knows it's in there anyway is because of the list I drew up so that people would have a last chance to see what was and wasn't in the archive in order to quickly make a suggestion. I did that in the interests of the community. It took me a day to do and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think it would be useful.

I'm not in the business of deleting films I like from my personal collection because some disgruntled person told me to. That would be ridiculous - I might want to watch their film again!

Nor will I stop sharing them with friends at a private level, either in the real world or via e-mail (which is what happens when an individual asks if I have a certain film). If he didn't want people to do that, he shouldn't have uploaded it in the first place.

Reducing the number of films in my private collection just because someone didn't like a review I gave them 2 years ago is not part of my plans and never will be. Removing films is not what I do - unless I see the film again and decide it's not as G o o d [Good] as I remember it. I tried on this occasion and decided it was still G o o d [Good] enough to stay in - so in it shall stay.

I intend to start a TMU channel for featured films in my Movie Vault - much like your own Dulcilicious channel - if someone has a problem with me showing their film I'll take it down. But I won't delete it from my drive nor stop sharing it by private request - that would be a disservice to the community.

And long term, which is what I'm really thinking about, long after all trace of The Movies has disappeared from any website - I will have this collection to show we ever existed. Personal grudges and politics are not going to sway me from preserving each one of the films that I've valued enough to put in it.

Jazz, You are a true asset to the community

And we are all very grateful for the hard work you have done

On the topic of the History page, I lolled when View Point was there, I tried so hard to distance myself from that film, I groaned.

Stick out tongue [:P] There's a film that didn't make the archive! - but luckily Lionhead has chosen to preserve it as one of the true classics of The Movies!

Wasn't that the one you said in the description "don't watch this!" (or was that somebody else?)

I don't think it was that bad at all.
