Stormbreaker came as a shock to be honest. I'm a fan of the books, but I didn't like the casting of Alex Rider, though he looked too posh. But he was quite good and actually the movie was quite entertaining. Pirates 2 though was brilliant. No matter what people say, too long, not as good as original, no one can deny the fact that it was a damn good laugh. Johnny Depp should get an oscar for what he does in those movies, he is just a legend. Happy [:)]Happy [:)]

    Re: Recent Films Thread

Any1 seen Cars at all? Well if not I made a silly little review over at Yahoo Movies, here it is if anyone is at all interested. Wink [;)] A (or Five Stars) I have been a huge fan of Pixar ever since there very first cinema debue, the amazing Toy Story. It was a joy to watch and ever since then I have loved every single Pixar movie. A Bugs Life was hugely underrated, Toy Story 2 managed to surpass the original, Monsters Inc. was not my favourite but enjoyable nonetheless, Finding Nemo was just the best thing I had seen on the cinema in ages and most recently The Incredibles was a hugelly enjoyable experiance. So when Cars was announced I really could not wait to see whether it could live up to all of the other movies. And yet, there was a time before I saw this movie, that I was preparing myself for a disappointment. The critics began saying it was Pixar's weakest yet, that Cars was a plodding affair that simply looked wonderful. So as I approached the movie I had prepared myself that this movie was not going to be as good as I hoped it would be. What a joy to say then that Cars is just a joy to watch. Sure its not up to standard of Finding Nemo and the Toy Story movies. But it easily stands up strong against Monsters Inc and A Bugs Life. For starters Cars looks beautiful, this is easily the best looking animated movie of all time. Sure, The Incredibles looked nice and shiny, hell even Over The Hedge looked nice, but they are nothing compared to the sheer beauty that is Cars. The racing scenes are just joys to behold, the cars shine, lights reflect off their hoods, dust flies off the race track, the fans (actual cars) gelam their headlights up as a sign of celebration. But these scenes aren't the best looking, oh no, that comes later when Lightning Mcqueen comes to Radiator Springs. And there we see beautiful landscapes, a waterfall that looks so realistic you would swear it was real. Cars is the triumph in animation, Dreamworks are nowehre near at a standard that Pixar is at. The cars look wondeful, tiny little details such as the tiny bugs being Volswagens, sure they aren't necessary features, but they just add to the atmosphere. So then, the animation looking beautiful is all very well and nice, but can the story live up to the standard set by other Pixar movies? Well to be honest, no, the story isn't up to the high standard set by the likes of Toy Story and Finding Nemo, but the story is still decent enough. The plot basically is all about a race car called Lightning Mcqueen who on his way to the grand final race in California gets lost. He finds himself stuck in a back-water town called Radiator Springs, here he learns to enjoy the smaller things in life. This plot isn't promising, its paper thin and not up to the good old stories in the other movies. Thankfully though, the movie gets its enjoyment value not out of the plot, but rather the characters being so entertaining and so memorable. Lightning Mcqueen is probably the weakest character, sure Owen Wilson does a grand job and there are the occasional decent lines, but his character his straight faced. That's all he does wander round while the supporting characters dish out the humour. The rest of the characters are up to a high standard, most notably is the tow-truck Mater (like Tomater without the To). Mater is a brilliant creation and doesn't just steal the movie, he runs away with it over the hills and beyond. He has all of the best lines and all of the audience just loved him. And yet, he wasn't my personal favourite. No, my personal favourites had to be the brilliant Italian cars. Luigi and his companion are the owners of the tire shop, there they wait desperately for some customers. Luigi loves racing, but only if it involves Ferraris. Those two just had me in fits of laughter for some reason and they were definately my favourites. There was also able support from Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt and even Jeremy Clarkson. Cars works because it is beautiful and yet has nice little jokes dotted in. Sure it does go on a bit at two hours and I suppose little kids would begin to get bored in it. But for me Cars just had me entertained from start to finish. And the ending scenes where the Cars sees a nice little movie called Toy Car Story had me in fits of laughter, just to see the classic characters reincarnated as little cars. Cars isn't the best Pixar movie, but neither is it the worst. Pixar are once again triumphant, and long may their reign last!

Caught Silent Hill in theaters, and I took it first for a "Boo, scared ya!" movie, but it wasn't. It actually scares you with the sounds, creepy surroundings and the story. And I saw also V for Vendetta yesterday. BRILLIANT GOD DAMN YOU! BRILLIANT! MJ out!

V For Vendetta was another brilliant film, I saw it when it came out in March. I loved it, and yet my friends disliked it because, "it wasn't as action packed as they thought it would be", I just thought it was a very clever and original idea.

    Re: Recent Films Thread

V for Vendetta was indeed brilliant! I love dystopia anyway, but they did it very well. It's to their advantage that the Wors... whatever Brothers didn't write it, we all saw what happened with the Matrix Rolleyes [] I just watched Lucky Number Slevin. I completely loved it!! It was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time I think. Those who haven't seen it, it's kind of like a modern noir film... it has its share of detective work involved (on the part of the viewer I mean) and unfortunately, it's one of those movies that has twists. I use to like twists but I now realize that the great movies with twists... you can never really enjoy them as much the second time (Usual Suspects, The Others, Sixth Sense). You can still love the movies, but it will never again be like the first time watching it. I don't want to say anything about Slevin for fear of spoiling it for those who haven't seen it, but it definately goes straight into Slug's Library Wishlist. It's almost out of place for movies of this decade and even the 90's. One of the best things was the writing (Jason Smilovic), it's almost Shakespearian in a lot of ways. It's a story of vengeance in many ways, very cunning plans, brilliant monologues and dialogues, the wordplays between characters were nothing short of excellence. Four nose salute from the Slug

    Re: Recent Films Thread

Lucky Number Slevin does look extremely cool, it sort of looked like a Tarantino movie to be honest, I will probably rent it out to see whether it lives up to expectations. I finally rented The Pink Panther (Steve Martin one) last night. I can say if you've seen the great Peter Sellers ones to avoid it at all costs, it doesn't even hold a teeny tiny matchstick to those movies. But, if you haven't seen those movies and you aer easily pleased, I suppose there is some humour to be found there, it does make you smile a few times at least. Happy [:)]

Loved Superman. Pirates 2 was below my expectations. Stormbreaker was decent. Over the Hedge was awful. X-men 3 was great fun.

    Re: Recent Films Thread

Aww, Over the Hedge wasn't that bad. It was silly, not a patch on Shrek, but it was quite funny. But I agree with the comment on Strombreaker, "decent", not great, not bad it is simply decent. Wink [;)]

    Re: Recent Films Thread

I love almost all people involved with Nacho Libre (writer, director, stars) and look forward to seeing it Happy [:)] Jack Black is a bit of a dork when he's improving but when he's acting scripted stuff he's good. Jared (director and co-writer) and Jerusha (co-writer) Hess did Napoleon Dynamite which was fantastic... but unfortunately seemed to be too fantastic and burnt out its cult following in no time at all through all the people randomly spouting "vote for pedro" at random times... I have faith in this movie Wink [;)]
