Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
Quoting: STXFilmsMight I suggest you dump rapidshare? They are very sluggish and us TMOers have to pay to be able to download a bunch of films within an hour...might I suggest mediafire.com ?
I know they're a pain -
Ok, I'll leave it up to those that request a film to tell me which service I should use (as long as it's free for me).
I'll default to rapidshare otherwise as it's the only one I know how to use.
For films under 5mb, I can e-mail direct.

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
Doesn't a month just fly by?!
I've decided to jazz this thread up a bit by providing more information about what makes the best of these films so good,
otherwise it's like saying "Casablanca was really good." - why should anyone who's not seen it be inspired by that? So, for those movies I designate classic status, you'll get a short (lol) idea of why I think you should see it.
Anyway, this month's offerings from my archive come from March 2006.
March 2006 Highlights
"No Dusk, No Dawn"
"Bobby" [C]
Mr Rainbow is a bit of a sad TMO story - his first major film, that I mentioned last month, was a work of exceptional genius. "Chaplin's Tribute" was indeed that. Lovingly recreated in black and white and featuring Chaplin's own jazz standard "Smile". It was clear that everything he was doing was in service to a cinematic legend that he really loved.
I was suspicious of the music - I could tell the music wasn't Mr_Rainbow's, it was definitely lifted from somewhere - but when I found out to my amazement that one of my favourite jazz ballads was written by Chaplin himself - then it just seemed that the choice of music was an addition to this reverent homage. Full respect to Chaplin was given by this film. I urge you to request this film from my archive - you won't be sorry you did.
Anyway - I kicked up a bit of a fuss when it got pulled. Me and Mr_Rainbow became friends. I am a one-star ninja when it comes to people who use music without saying thankyou - but I believe that if you show proper respect to the musicians, then there's nothing wrong. And if that happens to be Charlie Chaplin, who you've spent weeks or months on turning into a TMO film as a homage - then I defy any human being who's ever loved something that much to say that what he did was wrong. I was shocked by the decision to pull this film - it is still, in my mind, without question the worst decision ever made by the powers-that-be on TMO regarding a single film. Meanwhile - countless other films have made the top of the charts on uncredited or copyrighted music and been "hot picked" (those "hot picks" have long been a joke to me). And they've clearly exploited their musicians, whereas Mr_Rainbow was clearly paying homage to someone I didn't realise was a musician at all until watching his classic.
Mr_Rainbow, who is Italian, was so taken with the passion with which I defended his film that he asked me to name the dog in his next project (well - to give him some British dog names). I told him of the legend of "Greyfriar's Bobby" the Edinburgh dog who, legend has it, stayed at his master's grave 14 years after he died from Tuberculosis. I think this is a legend with at least some truth in it - as it's not a particularly outlandish story. Anyway - I suggested he call his dog Bobby. And he accepted.
This film is billed as the first film to "star a dog" on TMO. If anyone can show me an earlier one, I'm all ears (lol). It's a great film that puts some of the later dog films to shame. It also shows off some good lightning effects for the time as well. I loved the film.
Here it is - don't post in my thread until you've watched it (just kidding - but I'm telling you, you'll love it). Bobby
This was the last film Mr_Rainbow ever made - when I talked to him last (about 11 months ago) he said that he was disillusioned with TMO. I fear that the disgraceful way he was treated over "Chaplin's Tribute" sucked the very TMO life out of him (I'm not surprised - he poured love into every scene of that project, all filmmakers who got to watch it said the same).
All that effort, all that talent - and we've lost it thanks to some faceless, loveless bureaucrats - or was it you that flagged it? (and shame on you if it was) - certainly one of my top 5 "disgraceful moments on TMO".
I again say, I have "Chaplin's Tribute" and I'm almost begging you to ask me to send it to you. It's that good. But, if not, just click the link above and watch a proper animal hero film. The original and the best.
Moving on:
"Blackbird" [C]
Outrageously brilliant - one of the best ever TMO films. Anyone who hasn't seen it should stop playing tycoon mode.
My memory never registered that the two main characters were completely different nationalities - but indeed they are, there are subtitles for both. So well acted, and with a terrific story and amazing visual effects that stand up even now.
I refuse to take anyone seriously who has not been impressed by this film.
"The Lounge Singer" [C]
Perhaps my all time favourite - certainly the best ever short film in my mind. It's a film I often watch after a good gig (I'm a jazz musician myself by profession - and it just so happens tonight is one of those occasions; so I've just watched it again to make sure it deserves the praise I'm about to yet again bestow upon it).
Sorry - I'm going to go off on one again ...
The acting in this film was terrific - I never once thought the singer and the person narrating were two different people on the first viewing. When I first saw it, I recognised the scenario - but thought it a tad unrealistic that a singer would be allowed to sing indefinitely at the same place if she didn't draw the crowds after a few weeks (because I'm a pro musician, and you don't last too long with an empty bar). [but - it all completely fits into place by the end, believe me].
The pacing is absolutely perfect - I've just noticed that now, on the showing I've just given myself. But you won't be worrying about the pacing, there's a kind of dream-like nocturnalness to it all. I suppose it connected with me, because I live in that place - of one person watching you while you pour your heart out to an imagined crowd. I know what that's like - (says he coming home from a packed bar and cheering crowds tonight; but I have been to that horrible place in the past).
There's a very documentary style to the film. Which is why the story ends up being all the more shocking. The dramatic beats are handled fantastically right down to the expressions on the characters' faces which sell the story.
The only thing wrong with it is that the song wasn't allowed to finish - but there's no doubting in my mind that this is one of TMO's finest films nevertheless.
Indeed, I mentioned my top 5 "disgraceful TMO moments" - watching this for the first time would be classed in my top 5 "best TMO moments".
My political stances on TMO were formed by this film. I got my first de-rep as a result of feeling an empathy towards a fellow filmmaker - I dared to try to say hello to her after making my own jazz-based film. But the thread was jealously guarded by self-appointed bodyguards/brown nosers. When I found out about the rep system (which I had no idea about up until then), I knew that it had to go - and have been campaigning against it ever since. I've been proven correct by this idiotic raising of the "medium karma" threshold. It does nothing except increase the likelihood of "rep rings". I knew it was going on - and now they've confirmed it, they're making it even more of an imperative to do the same. It's unpoliceable too. Only by removing the system can truly natural behaviour be introduced to the site for the first time. I really believe that if you strip the crap away, most people will be civilised and nice to each other. And when they aren't, a quiet word from a copper will usually suffice in most circumstances.
Anyway:
"Kops - Red Light District"
"Doctor Who - Vampires of Armageddon I" [C]
A loving tribute to old Doctor Who (ie. long before the likes of Eccleston and Tennant showed up). I can't remember if this got banned or not - but nothing's banned when it's in my archive. Ask and ye shall get.
"Finished"
"Memories of Life" [C]
This film is the only one I've ever one-starred simply because I didn't want to "play the game" after watching it. It goes beyond what we do by releasing our films here - this was one man's way of expressing to our community the story of his daughter and how she lost her life. I still believe I was right to not award a star rating (not play the game with someone's grief), nor to even comment on the technical aspects of the film. Of course, that would have been crass and unfeeling. But I had to leave my message of support.
But my memory, even though I've not seen this for months, is undiminished. Anyone who's seen this will remember Lisa for a long long time.
"Dialogue With Death"
"Lesbian Cheerleaders From Space"
"These Moments"
Not quite a classic, but it is the only Indian music video on TMO and deserves a mention.
"Cutting"
also archived this month:
"Demon"
"The Renegade"
"Action Robert I"
"Action Robert II"
"Retrospect"
"Connery's Lament"
"Mitch Blayne I"
"Mitch Blayne II"
"Mitch Blayne III"
"Los Locos I"
"The George Bush Show"
"Armageddon Blues"
"Blood Oath I"
"Crime in the City - Episode 2"
"Crime in the City - Episode 3"
"Time to Kill"
All films scored at least 4 stars and are available for download from my archive upon request.
The archive now has 424 films in it.
The latest addition is the excellent "Interstellar Odyssey - Part I" by Nukester.
Unless I see you sooner - see you next month!

Quoting: dulciWords like that are what keep The Lounge Singer on my studio page. I'm tempted sometimes to do a S&E version of it because I think some of the shots could be handled so much better.
Thank you Jazzx ![Happy [:)]](/Emoticons/happy.gif)
Lounge Singer the director's cut!
If that were to be released next month, then it would certainly appear in this thread in June 2008!
I have a feeling you'll like next month's installment too. ![Wink [;)]](/Emoticons/wink.gif)

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
It's the 1st May, which means a new month has begun - and another adventure through the largest personal library of films from TMO must be undertaken. The archive now has 452 films in it, all of which are available on request and all of which scored 4-stars or more from me (not a duffer amongst them in other words). The latest addition is "Earth" by samyhouse.
Anyway, on with the show (as usual [C] means "Classic" and must be considered a must-watch film):
April 2006 Highlights
"The Christian and the Muslim"
"Black Widow" [C]
Two people talking in a bedroom for nearly a whole film sounds like a recipe for boredom - but throw in a deliciously (or should that be dulcilliciously?) spiteful female anti-heroine, superb acting and sparkling script and you get a TMO classic instead.
"A Life Beyond The Sun"
"Subway 3" [C]
This surreal masterpiece stars some great acting and amazing special effects that still have "wow" factor today. A very dark and atmospheric movie.
"Subway 4 [C]
Another outstanding installment of this superb series which retains and even improves on the extremely high standard of the previous episode.
"Unfinished"
"Obssessione"
"Night Pass" [C]
In this bleak vision of the future, global warming has caused destruction on a massive scale over the course of "hundreds not thousands" of years. The only thing wrong with this film is the timescale. We're all in for it within 50 years maximum if we don't do anything about it - the world as depicted in "Night Pass" is a lot closer than we think. This film focuses more on the characters who live in this world - just as we'll have to - and how it affects them because of the draconian steps the government has taken to ensure the effective continuation of civilisation.
But even more disturbingly, this is perhaps the only "eco"-themed film on TMO (feel free to prove me wrong). That shows that most of us don't really care and could be about to sleep-walk into a real Hell-on-Earth of our own making.
Watch and be warned.
"Hijack"
Worth mentioning that this film's main attraction is the now-famous plane mod - it was made specially for this film.
"POWER - Origin" [C]
The first part of this classic tale begins with an amazing montage and a set up involving how the hero's wife was killed. With powerful dialogue and superb editing, this first episode set a benchmark for fantasy cinema on TMO.
"POWER - The Way to Drakenburg" [C]
This is the "road-movie" part of this absorbing fantasy - it's got swashbuckling action and a smidgeon of sorcery from an engaging duo, the lumberjack and the wizard. Great music too.
"POWER III - Hunted" [C]
The third episode in this classic fantasy sword-and-sorcery tale. My favourite character is the witch. A memorable piece of acting by her.
"The Other Dimension" [C]
Basically an Alice-in-Wonderland type journey through the surreal. It's all very well made and there's plenty to see. These kind of films have since become two-a-penny, but this was one of, if not, THE original of the genre on TMO.
"The Real Hero" [C]
I gave this 4-stars - because of crappy Captain Tourettes, which I defy anyone to say is funny second time around (Lionhead obviously didn't like it the first time - the film got pulled and a "PG-13 version" had to be released). But the opening scene with Ted Denson was hilarious - the opening shot is classic where he's facing away from camera and turns around to reveal himself as a black-and-white minstrel .. in the Apollo Theatre in front of a black audience! So - I wouldn't say this was the best comedy, but there were some truly classic TMO moments within it. When it is funny, it's REALLY funny as in "classic comedy" funny!
"Kung Fu Moon"
"Time is a River" [C]
This was the first original poem I'd seen made into a TMO film - it was made by VelvetFog, his final TMO film. ("Kung Fu Moon" was one of his as well). An inventive film that takes you from the cradle to the grave in less than three minutes with intimate insights into the small things one might remember on one's death bed about the rest of one's life.
A great poem from this "Australian Counterstrike player", delivered passionately through excellent quality VO. A shame he didn't make more movies.
also archived this month:
"Revenge Through a Blade I"
"Double 00 By Night"
"A Needed Spark"
"A Rose is a Rose"
"Nowhere"
There's one film I haven't mentioned, I thought it fitting to save it until last:
"FEAR" [C]
by Patty82
Patty82's last completed film is an all-out creep-fest horror movie, it's not out of sentimentality that I still think this is the best on TMO of its genre. Superb effects, both sonically and visually; effective music as well. It made me jump twice - it takes some doing for a TMO film to do that to me even once. There's a gorgeously spooky atmosphere that permeates the whole film. An indisputable classic of the horror genre on TMO.
Patty82 was killed in a car accident last year, and so I dedicate this edition of "The JazzX Movie Vault" to his memory.

Put this in my open review thread (you're allowed to do that for other people's films, but you take the rap if I don't like it! [and presumably the credit if I do!])
I'll forget to watch it otherwise. Here's the link:
http://allboards.lionhead.com/showthread.php?t=185716&page=39&highlight=jazzx+reviews+open
I'm always interested in adding quality old films to the archive - but they have to go through my existing review threads first. Which means a trip to my Open review thread so they can be added to the list of films I must watch. I like to keep all the films I need to see in one place.
A score of 4 stars or more gets them put in the archive.

You mean a torrent of the whole archive?
I'm not familiar with the term iso, what does that mean? [something to do with isohunt?]
I know how to download a torrent, but I've never uploaded one before - you'll need to give me more information than that.
Plus, my archive is over 4GB of high quality TMO films - all 452 of them.
It would take me at least 48 hours to upload them anywhere.

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
An ISO is an archive file that stores everything in a format useful for cutting CDs or DVDs.
Actually, if I were to open an archive such as this as a torrent, I wouldn't archive them all into one big file like that. The best way would be to keep each WMV file separate, so people can pick and choose what they want to download.
To create a torrent, you need a torrent client program such as BitComet. You could put all the WMV files for a given month in one folder. Then go through the torrent client's "Make Torrent", choosing that directory. Once you've created the torrent file (which is essentially just a small text file that lists the files on your hard drive you want to share), you upload it to services such as mininova.org. Then link to the entry on mininova. People download that little torrent file, then use their torrent client to download directly from you.
The downside to this is you have to have your computer and Internet connection turned on all the time, otherwise people can't download from you.
Another place you can put files is filefront.com. You don't even need to register there to upload files! And it accepts WMV files directly. This alternative is probably much easier, and less taxing on your system, than the whole torrent route.

Yes, that's what I thought - I can't see the demand being high enough that multiple seeds would be able to supply the films in a torrent while I was switched off (I value the longevity of my hard drive too much to have my computer switched on all the time).
Uploading to somewhere like filefront would be an extremely lengthy process - and although I could do it by month, I think that my current system of allowing people to ask me through PM or in this thread for the films they want is a better idea. So far I've not seen enough demand for me to waste time uploading to external hosting, when the files will only be deleted after 2 weeks if no-one wants them.
If someone asks for the whole archive, I'll give them it in installments on filefront/rapidshare/whatever. That way, even if the files get deleted, I've done my job.
But I see no reason to do that when no-one's asked for it.

Your excellent film "One Hit Wonder" will appear in a 2008 edition (no later than May 200 ![Glasses [8)]](/Emoticons/glasses.gif) .
All these films were added to the archive in April 2006 not April 2007.
So every month, we get to see films from one year ago.

Both parts of this incomplete series (part II was released last July) are still online.
The Light in the Dust - Part I
The Light in the Dust - Part II
They are also both in my archive - outstanding films. There's no doubt these would have received my highest award if I watched them today for the first time (the Prufrock Award for Outstanding Cinema was first presented in late August 2006).

Yes - it took me a while - but Lizard3209 (?) is the owner of Decadent Pictures who made these films closely in collaboration with kate and sherwinliu.

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
Another month has been and gone,
I think it's time for a classic sing-song!
That's because May 2006 was the month of the music video ...
May 2006 Highlights
Once again, a [C] denotes classic status - all films scored at least 4 stars from me, apart from this one ...
"5 Stars (Music Video)" [C]
This is one of my own.
The day before I started on this, I saw a 2 minute film which was just some guy on a beach singing appallingly badly about how he was going to make it to Hollywood (no music behind him either). It was dreadful, and yet the 5-star reviews were flying in. "Well", I thought, "If that's all you need to do to get 5 stars - then I'll knock something up much better than that tomorrow!"
'Tomorrow' turned into 2 months of the toughest, painstaking filmmaking I've ever done - and all so I could get "5 stars" -lol. The end result was superb and very much worth it - and I also made many discoveries along the way about how to defeat the multitude of bugs that plague this game.
I put everything into this film - I composed a song, the first proper original song to be featured in a TMO music vid. That took two weeks to record.
Then I storyboarded the "star" animations I was going to use in the film and designed my very first custom backdrops, then I made some rather fetching beauties in star maker. I then marked roughly what the story was on the lyrics sheet (yes it has a story). The story is about a lecherous lounge lizard who owns a private island - he surrounds himself with gorgeous women, but the most gorgeous of all broke up with him out of jealousy - after she'd given him a thorough beating! I named her "Violet T'Endancy"(!) In the end they get back together (of course).
The film was innovative in that it used moving peformers in the foreground while animations played in the background during some sequences. These were painstakingly made to the 10th of a second (which became a 1/5th of a second on export). Also, this being before the advent of free camera, all the shots were edited very carefully with what was in the game. I remember covering up the edge of the set in some shots with palm trees!
I also had to take my recorded song and make my character's lips move - that involved copying the relevant lines of vocals into the dialogue track and muting it as much as possible (I call this Muted Dialogue Lip Synch). Everything went great, using Dylen's Progressive Shooting Technique [PST] (apart from several cases of doing battle with the shuffles, which were a new phenomena at the time). Eventually, I was happy with the way the film looked and sounded, and pressed the export button ...
... and this action became my first proper encounter with the dreaded sound synch bug. My song finished a good 30 seconds before the visuals did. I was horrified. What do I do? All that work for nothing? Then it hit me ...
I noticed, that I could see the film drifting out while it was exporting - so I turned this to my advantage and started shaving off small sections of scenes to keep it in synch (a technique which I've branded "Export Shaving Technique"). This was easy at first - but of course, the export icon had to be clicked each time - which meant watching the whole film just to get to the latest point where it had drifted out. The last minute or so was absolutely painstaking. Literally hours to get the last phrase in synch with the star animation. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I got very emotional when the romantic scene between Marco Queso and his ex at the end fit the music beautifully. And then when the final note nailed the animation, you would have thought I had won the World Cup (on penalties)! That was a moment in my life, not just on TMO, where I knew I had done something special. I pressed export for the last time - I thought ...
... Well, it kept crashing a few times, but eventually it exported and I played back the film, the Champagne on ice next to me (I had even taken the foil off) ...
Everything went well for the first 3 minutes - and then OH! The HORROR! A vicious black screen sent everything out of synch by half a second. And then another one a bit further in.
But I watched it export - why did I not see this? I exported the film again, and there was no doubt - this was no random glitch, it appeared in the same place every time. I coined a phrase, "The Devil's Bookmark", to describe what I had encountered. I set about doing some experiments to find the cause.
To cut a long story short, I shuffled some scenes around and found that you could shuffle these invisible devil's bookmarks to the end of the film where they would do no harm. In just half and hour, using a deck of cards, I figured out the solution. It took much longer than that to tediously shuffle the hundreds of scenes one by one though. I exported the film, and with baited breath waited to see my fate ...
It worked - I was desperately tired by now, but waves of euphoria rushed over me. I simply had to show the world what I had made against all the odds! I released it on TMO and started visiting the threads of people who I thought might be interested in watching it.
That friendly act cost me my first rep points, as I mentioned in a previous month - it also made me realise that this wasn't altogether the friendly place I thought it to be - and that it had an institutionalised way for people to be unfriendly to one another (still unique on any website I've ever visited). The euphoria quickly drained from me - depressed and deflated I went to bed.
Two days later, I reluctantly went back to TMO and surprisingly found that my film had reached number 1 in comedy and 11th overall. One reviewer called my film a "lounge lizard classic" - that's something I've remembered, I think that's a good description of it. The pain had been worth it.
Let's forget about the effort that went into it though - why do I think my film deserves to stand alongside Blackbird, Lounge Singer, King Kong et al?
Simply because it remains the most tightly edited music video on TMO - every phrase is synchronised as closely as it possibly can be to the visuals. The drum fills every 8 bars are usually accompanied by a spectacular visual effect.
It was the first music video to use a completely original full-length song from its filmmaker.
It was the first music video to use backdrop animations while performers moved in the foreground (I don't think I've seen that since either).
I know that if someone else had made this, it would definitely receive 5 stars from me and become one of my favourites.
"Raggle Taggle Gypsies" (Music Video)
Worth mentioning that this one only had 12 ratings, and yet is definitely one of the more unusual music videos, being set in medieval times and set to a folk song.
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"
"500 Pints" (Music Video)
This vintage music vid was based on The Proclaimers "500 Miles" song. It features numerous beer bottles in a well-edited piece of work.
"In the Garden - Jinxxx Reminxxx" (Music Video) [C]
A cult classic music video - this one has incredibly strange music and even stranger visuals (which are eye-popping in their colourful artistry). I don't think there's been a music video like this one since.
"The Stone and the Dove" (Music Video)
Another folk song given the TMO treatment. Lovely languid pacing in the visuals for this one, you really feel like you're watching a story that matches the lyrics.
"The Light in the Dust - Part I" [C]
The first word of my review for this film says it all, "Beautiful."
An outstanding piece of work - very much in the same dark atmospheric style as the recently released (and brilliant) "Into the Shadow" from many of the same people (visit one of the replies above - it seems this studio changed hands at some point). It features beautiful acting, writing, effects and a compelling story with original score. Certainly not one to be missed.
"These Three Words"
"The Germantican" [C]
I've always remembered this film despite forgetting the title. It's a story of unrequited love involving a car that's used by our lonely hero as a musical instrument to try to charm the woman of his dreams - except the music it produces is excruciating to listen to (which doesn't exactly endear him to the neighbours or the law or, indeed, his intended!)
There's a truly brilliant twist in this one - you simply have to watch it. It certainly deserves to have been watched by the whole site instead of just 58 people.
also archived this month,
"Multiple Minkowski" (German w. English subs)
"Sydney Music Vid"
"Man of Today" (Music Video)
"Stellar Perceptions"
"One Uncomfortable Moment"
"Empty Vessel"
All these are available from my archive on request.
The archive currently has 483 films in it, the latest addition being the SuperHiRes version of "The God Illusion - Root of all Ills? Part 1: Unintelligent Design" by me.
See you next month!

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
Wow Jazzx that story about the making of "Five Stars" was a good read, thank you.
Informative too, the patented "shaving" technique is a fool proof fix to the sound bug (but as you said it takes skill and mounds of patience)
I'll bet you got emotional..eureka! you finally had it!
Oddly enough, my first movie on TMO was Hammerhead, a song of mine, which kept drifting as I attempted to export it. In the end, I started shaving bits of scenes down to compensate for the offset. The final export was acceptable.
It worked well enough for me back then but... since then I have steered clear of making any movies whatsoever! Yay?
nice bit of story telling there, I enjoyed five stars and gave it..heh heh.. five stars.. ![Wink [;)]](/Emoticons/wink.gif)

Re: The JazzX Movie Vault
 Quoting: jazzx"The Real Hero" [C]
I gave this 4-stars - because of crappy Captain Tourettes, which I defy anyone to say is funny second time around (Lionhead obviously didn't like it the first time - the film got pulled and a "PG-13 version" had to be released). But the opening scene with Ted Denson was hilarious - the opening shot is classic where he's facing away from camera and turns around to reveal himself as a black-and-white minstrel .. in the Apollo Theatre in front of a black audience! So - I wouldn't say this was the best comedy, but there were some truly classic TMO moments within it. When it is funny, it's REALLY funny as in "classic comedy" funny!
just thought i'd clear things up.... the PG13 version was a sarcastic jab at lionhead...not a PG safe version.... i dont do those
I never knew you actually liked this movie... bonus
