Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

First and foremost -- please keep this thread friendly and flame free.

I'm thinking about buying an XBOX 360 or a PS3. I have a Wii and my kids like it, but I'm ready for something with more umph!

Do the latest models of the 360 still have issues (red ring, etc.)?

For those of you that have both an XBOX 360 and a PS3 -- compare the two and explain your likes and dislikes.

If you just have one of the systems you can chime in too, but I figure that the people with both will be pretty objective.

    Thanks.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

We had a big ps3 or 360 thread in the gaming industry forum. Lots of defending of each console and some (or at least one) who have both.

I dont have both but have played a fair bit of 360 in school where we had one and i really still like the games ps3 has to offer more. A lot of my favorite games from ps2 is getting new games on ps3 and i wont miss them. Really it's just what of the games you prefer (uncharted or gears, Killzone or halo, heavy rain or alan wake Wink [;)] ). If you want to pay(or if you even care for online). If you care for blu ray.

Online is a big deal for me. However, I'm not thrilled that you have to pay for some of the services on the XBOX.

For example, on the XBOX, in order to use Netflix you have to have a Gold membership on top of the Netflix membership. The PS3 will not require a monthly fee of any kind for it's Netflix gateway. Makes me wonder how Microsoft exposes third-party services.

I like that the XBOX is a Windows Media Center Extender. That's pretty cool. Does the Play Station 3 support that kind of functionality? Can the PS3 connect to your computer to access content?

Don't listen to the heathen chanting about his unholy PS3 go with the true lord The Xbox 360..... Just kidding. I've played both PS3 and Xbox 360... they both had there advantages and disadvantages but I preferred the Xbox. See I don't know if they've up dated this now but a thing you can do with both consoles is play music through them however when I had the PS3 you could do this while playing a game... with the 360 you can which can make for a lot of fun times, specially on a game were there's not much story... you can play while blasting out your own hand picked music. The PS3 has far better hardware and isn't going to blow up any time soon. Even though it has better hardware I doesn't really show a lot of the time. The games are more then often on par with each other graphics wise and some times the 360 will even beat the PS3 on graphics.

I didn't have the PS3 long enough as to try out online so I can't judge... I've heard the 360's online is far above the PS3 but you do have to pay for Xbox live (truth be told you can go online for free with a silver membership but you can play games online without a gold account).

The Xbox does blow up from time to time... mine's just about done it (it's holding on by a scratch of life) the amount of time it takes for a 360 to do this isn't always consistent. My first Xbox died within the first year... second one died two months down the line.. third xbox died 3 months down the line. my current xbox (my fourth) as lasted me three years before it's suddenly started to screw up on me.

Each console as a G o o d [Good] verity of games for it, although I have heard that the backwards compatibility isn't screwed for the PS3. It's all about what your preferences are here... Just look at each of the console exclusives and weight out which you'd prefer. Some games have console exclusive expansion packs... GTA is a prime example with the Lost and Damned and The ballad of gay (And we all know Gays are wrong according to the Daily Express gays like the PS3 and not Xbox 360... unnatural and sickening) Tony.

Weigh out the advantage and disadvantages... I did... I weigh the Xbox 360's price being £120 and the PS3's being at £400 (Without games).

Online doesn't cost much... £5 a month.. or you can pay £40 a year.. not much for what you get.

Yeah, been watching videos, listening to music ect through the PS3, whilst all the data is on our desktop upstairs.

Yeah the 360 is full of immature little pricks, I tend to just play games while in a party of friends so I don't have to talk to the immature little basterds that occupy XBL.

Ho right... I though he meant the fans as in the fanboys. Ho the 360 can be a loud little bugger at times... actually it just depends really. The first one I had was deafeningly loud... the few after that weren't all too silent. the last one hasn't been too bad... when you boot up a game the fan gets a little loud but it either quietens down or you just don't notice it after a while.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

The new Slim PS3s are quiet too.

    r.e - the media stuff.
I like the PS3 as a media box - so much so that although I own one of the original PS3s with backward compatibility etc, I bought a 2nd one when the Slim versions came out to use solely as a Media box. Blu ray, video, media streaming, music, photos etc - it's G o o d [Good] at all of them. Although neither console supports .MKV files afaik - but there's a few apps with passthrough filters that don't spend hours converting video and just re-wrap the .x264 codec into a recognisable formal. Takes a couple of minutes for a feature film in 720p.
If you're considering streaming media, I can recommend using TVersity rather than the standard Windows Media Player streaming btw.

If you live in the UK, there's a dedicated BBC iPlayer option in the menu system. Also there's a really quite brilliant PVR called PlayTV for watching and recording digital Freeview. Very overlooked add-on is that - not free, but the interface and reception are very much leading edge. It integrates and feels like a proper off-the-peg PVR rather than something tacked on. TBH, I watch all of my tv through the PS3 now, which is part of the reason I got a 2nd one once they reduced it's size a bit - as an all-in-one box under the telly, it makes a lot of sense.

Still, if media is what interests you as well, I'd wait until the end of the month when the Movie and Video on demand service launches and see how that suits you. then make up your mind.

Don't own an Xbox though, so I can't really do a reliable comparison not having lived day-to-day with it. Obviously, everything I say is going to be coloured by being a PS3 owner.

You'd have to like the games as well, of course...Wink [;)]

It works with all kinds of things - it's a nifty piece of kitSmily [:)] It'll run with the Wii (or anything else with a browser supporting recent enough flash, for that matter - 7 or 8, can't remember off the top of my head), various handhelds/phones, and pretty much anything that accepts the UPnP media protocol.

It's more the DVD drive than the fan that makes the 360 so loud. If you install the games to hard disk, it's pretty quiet.
I don't 'do' sigs. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

I'm probably not that unbiased even owning all 3 of the consoles, purely cause I don't have many games for the PS3 cause of no money (and I don't class the wii as a games console, more of a paperweight)

But my two pennies are that the 360 is a great machine, probably not as powerful as the ps3 and not having blu-ray is a disadvantage, but it's got G o o d [Good] exclusives and I'd call it more of a social machine, purely in the sense it's a lot easier to play and chat with friends on the 360.

The PS3, also has some amazing exclusives and much better graphics (on some things) but I'd say online isn't as developed as the xboxs.

So in conclusion the PS3 is probably better, but I will always love my xbox 360 a hell of a lot more even if it does red-ring 3 times a year.

Plus I too have a puppy that will die if you don't buy a wii! mwuhahahaha

I'm still torn between XBOX360 and PS3 however.

I'd be having a look at which one has exclusives that you like the look of, in that case. Not just existing ones, but future ones too. Most games come out on both machines, and these days you'll get a G o o d [Good] experience on either (with the occasional aberration such as Fallout 3 for the PS3).

Or, get both. You could always get both...Wink [;)]

    Both sounds a G o o d [Good] option.
As for noise, ps3 is silent as the grave, the xbox 360 on the other hand, well let's put it like this I was terrified the other day because I thought my game disc was being grinded in half it was that loud.

Xbox 360 has more exclusives, or worthwhile exclusives

    PS3 has free online.

Whichever one of those appeals to you more, get that one.

Not trying to bash the playstation 3 but besides uncharted and infamous what exclusive titles are already out for the playstation 3 that are any G o o d [Good]? I know god of war 3 and kingdom hearts 3 are are going to come out and by that time I might buy one. But are there any other G o o d [Good] games that I don't know about? Any G o o d [Good] rpg's?
