    Becoming a game designer?

Does anyone know what it takes to become a game designer? I mean like Molyneux? How did he get to where he is? How does one achiece said status?

    They learn to spell achieve...

Nah that was harsh, it takes hardwork and dedication obviously. And a fair bit of starting capital. But if you want to become a games designer I'd check out some of the programming forums lower down.

    Re: Becoming a game designer?

Well, if his wikipedia article is to be believed, he started off by selling games for the Atari and Commodore 64 (at the time using games to sell floppy discs). He obviously learned a little about programming and designed his first game, which was text based. (It sold two copies, and he suspected on was purchased by his mother).
Then moved on to bigger and better things as his skills improved and creativity flourished. You often have to start small. You don't just do a university course in computing and get an instant pass working for the developer of your choice.

Nobody ever gets anywhere on ideas alone, you have to make them real somehow. You don't become a a successful filmmaker without ever touching a camera and you don't become a novelist by never writing a word. You can become a successful musician whilst having next to no talent, but that's a whole other kettle of fish. Hmm [^o)]

The only thing worse than beating a dead horse is betting on one.

Talent, effort, and sheer, raw, naked sexiness. You need to be able to look publishers in the eye and say "Yeah, you want me. And you can have me. For a price."

    A G o o d [Good] lawyer might help as well.

    Dam that sexiness of him.

Didn't he get in to game development by mistake? I remember reading in an interview I think that a company wanted some games made for a console and PMs company name sounded much like anothers that was a game developers?

Mr Molyneux's greatest contribution to game design can be summed up with an interview from years ago (apparently) about the original Populous. Went something like...

Interviewer - Of course, the terrain editor in the game was a stroke of genius.
Peter - Oh, I put that in because I'm far to lazy to do my own level designing...
